"Our mother"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Care of the Elderly (Wards 13-16)

(as a relative),

We would like to give thanks to the nursing and auxiliary staff of wards four and eight in Hairmyres Hospital East Kilbride for the care and dignity shown to our mother in August when she sadly passed away this morning.

We would like to give a special mention to Dr Clayton, Miriam and Jo all from ward eight also Gillian from palliative care. They were all exceptional in the care shown to our mother and us.

The same cannot be said about the elderly care team who entered our mother's room when there was no family member present. We found this strange as we were with our mother twenty four hours a day and had been there on every other occasion. They spoke about mum, and not to her, regarding a hospice care home and ward 15. They left our mum deeply upset and from that point on she closed down.

Dear JL-2019,

Thank you for taking precious time to share your kind reflections on the staff and services provided to you as a family and to your mothers care.

I was so sorry to hear of your poor experience with the elderly care team at such an emotional time and would like to explore this further if you would allow me to do so.

I understand this may be difficult for you but can I ask that you get in touch with me as I'd like to ensure that we don't get this wrong for any other patients or families moving forward.

If you could contact our patient affairs team on Tel: 01355 58 5325 and they will pass your details confidentially to me to call you back at your convenience.

My thoughts and condolences are with you all.

Kind Regards

Gwen

Dear JL-2019,

Thank you for getting in touch and again I'm sorry for the delay in returning your call. I've looked at the records to identify the staff who visited your mother on the occasion mentioned and have discussed with them the situation and how both your mother and you as a family felt.

As I said on the phone, its important we learn from our actions as communication is key in everything we do especially when providing person centered care.

Staff were not aware of the impact of the discussion and will take this forward in their practices.

kind regards

Gwen
