"My mums Care"

About: Strathcarron Hospice / Day Care Service Strathcarron Hospice / In-Patient Unit

(as a relative),

My mum was admitted to Strathcarron just 6 weeks after diagnosis of lung cancer. Her oxygen levels had dropped and initially we thought that her stay with you would be temporary and that once her oxygen levels were under control she would be discharged again but that was not to be. Mums symptoms worsened and it was no longer a consideration for discharge. I remember asking my mum how she found Strathcarron and her answer was

“it’s like a holiday camp here!”

She loved all the staff and said they were all so kind and caring. I can vouch for that as I visited every day during her 2 week stay. Making my mum feel comfortable was of the highest importance for all staff and volunteers alike and they had the mix just perfect, not too clinical and not too intrusive. Caring conversation, sense of humour and important signals picked up on by the nursing staff made the end of life care package everything it should be. From all things available at the daycare facility to in ward  massage and even a hairdresser to boot, this place is something special. Their care for my mum was so tender and thoughtful and I’m so glad that my mum chose Strathcarron as her palliative care choice. The staff not only looked after her but after myself and my sisters too. As we got the news that mums health had deteriorated, myself and my sisters moved into mums room , from that point the staff looked in on all of us regularly- offering breakfast every morning and tea and biscuits throughout the day. We too felt like we had built up a rap ore with the staff and were so grateful of their support. We stayed with mum for the following 100 hours sitting around her bedside sharing memories and songs & tears until sadly she passed away. The manners and respect shown from the staff after mum passed away was also second to none. We all appreciated your care so much and mum did too. Thank you so much

Hello

Thank you for taking time in your bereavement to post your story about Strathcarron Hospice. We appreciate the very positive comments that you have made regarding the experiences you all shared whilst your mum spent her last weeks in the In-Patient Unit. It sounds like all the various forms of support your mum, your sisters and yourself received from the various people in our Hospice team, helped you all cope with a time of sadness. We are sorry for your loss but we are very pleased to know that things we did, ‘big or small’ made you all feel cared for and which seemed to have helped you to focus on how you all could spend your very precious family hours with your mum.

Thank you again, your feedback will be shared with the Team.

regards
Lesley
