"Operation at Woodend Hospital"

About: Woodend Hospital / Elective Orthopaedics

(as the patient),

Very disappointed with the lack of care and compassion that was shown to me from the staff in ward 9/10 at Woodend Hospital.

After being admitted at 11am for an elective procedure I was left sat in a chair, after being told to change into a gown, for multiple hours being told a number of times I would be next only to be left until last in the day.

On returning from the recovery room I was taken to ward 9 to not be given my buzzer at any point during my stay. What I believe is a basic patient care need. I returned from theatre around 5:30pm and I was not offered any fresh water for the entirety of time I waited until I was able to be discharged.

Dear Colinnn54

I am very sorry to read of your experience at Woodend Hospital. I am assuming you were waiting in the Department of Scheduled Admissions for your theatre slot. I am very sorry that you had such a long wait. Operations do not always go as planned and some take longer than expected. You should have been kept informed and also we would normally try to minimise the time you spent waiting in a theatre gown.

You should have been given water as soon as it was safe to do so in Ward 9. I am again sorry that this did not happen.

I will be discussing your post with the Senior Charge Nurse and Nurse Manager responsible for that area.

If you would feel able to, please call me or email me so that I can find out a bit more about your experience and try to understand what went wrong on that particular day so that we might try to prevent this happening to other patients in the future.

Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback. I can be contacted on 01224 559259 or email loldroyd@ nhs.net
