Paper knickers and surgical stockings
along with a hospital gown
was part of the preparation
of my gallbladder removal countdown.
I took everything else but a bathrobe,
so, an extra gown was given to me
to wear on top of the back to front
to spare my dignity.
The nurse went through my form with me
and explained all I had to know,
including having a pregnancy test
that’s if I could go.
I met my anaesthetist
I know I was in good hands,
because within our conversation
he showed me he understands.
I also met my surgeon
who told me all I would incur,
what may happen within my surgery
and any risks that could occur.
Off I went to sit and wait;
then they called my name,
I was hooked up to all my observation machines
and the time for me to sleep came.
I woke up in recovery
with a nurse talking to me,
asking me if I needed anything
like a cup of tea.
I felt a little nauseous
so, I only had water for now.
In and out of sleep I went
and this they did allow.
After a time, I was moved to admissions
where they took great care of me!
To get my medication sorted
the surgeon went to the pharmacy, personally!
My oxygen levels were going low
and I was given some tricks to help me breath;
then I was given chapter and verse
of what to do
as it was my time to leave.
I am truly humbled by the care I received,
it was person centred every step of the way!
In comparison, it could never feel enough,
because, Thank You is all I can say!
