"Nothing short of rude and uncaring"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics (wards 21-23)

(as a relative),

September 2019

My husband has been in and out of the RAH since April and undergone several operations on his right knee and due to an infection of super bugs he has had to be given intravenous anti-biotics. Over this period he has been in ward 21 and 22 which I can't praise the staff enough for their care and support in making his stay that bit more bearable. He was sent home in Aug 19 but had to be re-admitted a week later as the infection had gotten worse again.

When we arrived at the hospital ward 23 we are shown into a cupboard / store room (or what they like to call a treatment room) this room was far from a treatment room as this was boxes and equipment everywhere. Then to put insult to injury the manner which we were spoke to was disgusting and rude, and yet again the staff presumed my husband was a female and they didn't have a bed ready for him. He was then put into ward 22. then last week he was moved from ward 22 through to ward 23 where the staff have been nothing short of rude and uncaring not just towards him (but I witnessed with other patients with holding pain relief to the point that the patient signed themselves out and presented themselves to accident and emergency where they received the appropriate pain relief and reappeared in the ward hours later)

My husband has been accused of compromising his wound by nursing staff (total lies) and makes me so angry as he has had to remind staff to ensure that hands are washed and gloves put on when changing the dressing or given his medication through the pic site. Staff speak to him as if he's a child demanding they know where he is a all times (which is fair but it's the manner which they engage that's the problem). When staff request him to be back on the ward for a certain time to receive his medication when he ensures he's back on the ward 23, staff can take hours before medication is given; on one occasion I sat through visiting time no medication was given then when night staff came on the day staff informed them that my husband was not on the ward to receive it which had a knock on affect on the rest of his medication

He woke up once this week to find his belongs and fruit on the floor and when asked how this happened no-one could give him answer.

The whole point of our complaint is that the staff in WARD 23 have been very unhelpful, not respectful to patients health and well-being and the manner in which they communicate has been rude and don't value patients feelings.

My husband is hopefully improving so that he can get home but this last few weeks in WARD 23 have been very difficult due to the staffs attitude the lack of respect and cleanness.

Both my husband and I used to hold the NHS in high esteem and we both know that the staff work hard but for the few staff who have made being in hospital and horrible experience due to their attitude displayed as disgusting and needs to be address. they should be reminded to reflect on their behaviours and if they were in hospital as a patient would they wish to be treated in this manner.

Dear Fighting,

I am very sorry to read of your husband's experience in Ward 23. This is not the standard we expect.

To allow us to properly investigate the issues raised, can I ask that you contact me on 0141 314 7101 or by email heather.lapsley@ggc.scot.nhs.uk to allow me to take more details.

Kind Regards

Heather
