"Given no help with the baby"

About: The Princess Royal Maternity Unit (Glasgow)

(as the patient),

It’s taken me a few month before I decided to post this however I felt it needed shared to prevent it happening in future to others.

I fell pregnant last year, my son is now a few months old. Within ten weeks of being pregnant I had a heavy bleed and visited the hospital I understood they couldn’t do much but the doctors attitude that day was disgusting, I was told that if it was a miscarriage that was just it, no scan was offered, no checks to myself. Just sent straight home with no follow up, unsure if I had miscarried or not... having had previously.

Luckily this wasn’t the case, the week prior to having my son I was in daily with serve back pain. Not one person checked my cervix or anything else, sent to physio who suspected early labour yet still no one listened?

I was sent in to be induced, my cervix was open.. after 1 pessary & 30 minutes later my waters broke, I was 3cm. I was loads of pain, every contraction felt like I needed to push however I was told I was just a naive young girl, that I wasn’t dilated enough, come to 5cm still in ward of 6 people, I was told to be quiet I was scaring others in the room and was only given paracetamol. I was then taken into a small room just off the ward, finally gas and air after begging and pleading. By this point I was in so much pain I was blacking out, 7cm I finally got to labour ward and was given epidural. My first 7cm were quick, 5hours! But then 6hours stuck at 9cm, 5hours into being stuck at 9cm I got hormonal drip. Shortly after a doctor visited and said that I should have been in theatre at 3cm as baby was in an undeliverable position. Back to back-with his chin coming out first. By this point I was swelling down there.

I was taken to emergency c-section, after this I was given no help with baby despite not being able to stand that night etc. Trying to reach for baby from my bed. The bed buzzer didn’t work either, I informed them but no one listened again. More than one occasion they forgot my blood thinning injection. Once able to stand I was to scared to sit down in case I couldn’t get back up to my baby. I was exhausted cried every night after my partner left as I felt so alone. One midwife told me to man up, and that everyone gets the same.

I never managed to get a shower the full 5 days I was in as the water stopped working, the lifts stopped working, the toilet and electricity stopped working.

I was beyond over the moon to get home after more of less demanding to be discharged.

However On my last day I did get a lovely midwife whom helped me find my latch with my little boy, and I can’t thank her enough .

I shall never return here

Dear Whocares2019

Thank you for sharing your feedback on Care Opinion.

Firstly, congratulations on the birth of your baby son. I hope you are both doing well over these last few months.

I am very sorry and disappointed to hear that elements of your care and experience during your pregnancy and childbirth were not of the standard we would expect.

I would welcome the opportunity to review your concerns in more detail with you. If you are happy to do so, please contact my colleague pamela.mcgoldrick@ggc.scot.nhs.uk who will then be able to advise what additional information we require and how we will progress this with you.

Best Wishes

Dear Whocares2019

As a result of your feedback we have obtained further buzzers as contingency within each ward and patient buzzers are checked daily by HCSWs. If any bed space does not have a functioning buzzer it is escalated and replaced immediatetly.

Unfortunately during the power outage at the PRM there was a period of 4 hours when there was no flowing water. Contingency was quickly put in place to enable patients access to drinking water and toilet facilities. I am sorry if this was not effectively communicated to you and your experience has been shared with the staff for their learning.

Emergency power was also made available during this period with backup generators.

Thank you for your kind comments relating to the breastfeeding support which was demonstrated by the midwife prior to going home. Maternity Care Assistants are an additional resource who have been trained to provide breastfeeding advice and support, alongside your midwife within our postnatal wards and community settings. Their effectiveness is continually audited and evaluated. I hope you are enjoying your time together as a new family and thank you for taking the time to feed back on your experience.

If you have any outstanding concerns you would wish us to review in more detail with you then please contact me at Victoria.Mazzoni@ggc.scot.nhs.uk and I will be happy to progress this with you.

Best Wishes
