"Urology - Prostrate"

About: Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

Unfortunately the standard pathway for suspected prostrate cancer was completely unsuitable for me as an individual.

For example, I was examined for enlarged prostrate (rectal exam) on the same day as a previous booked MRI. Despite not having the results of the MRI I was advised that I needed a guided biopsy ASAP. What wasn't explained properly to me is that there are alternatives available such as a template biopsy which provides greater accuracy of results and a better chance of finding cancer cells and also the possibility of an Open MRI scan for people with claustrophobic conditions such as myself.I only found this out by researching on the Web and a very helpful consultant at the

Birmingham Prostrate Clinic.

I would advise any patients who are concerned about following the standard prostrate cancer pathway to consider alternative options and seek as much information as possible before committing to treatment.

I was lucky on this occasion with a positive outcome, thank you God.

I also accept that the NHS has severe funding issues but it doesn't mean that time can't be spent explaining the alternatives.
