"My brothers care"

About: Royal Oldham Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as a relative),

The nurses and staff on my visit was rude and disrespectful. As I entered the ward there is a nurses station at the front there where 3 nurses stood around the desk and one sat on talking top talking about their weekend. When I asked them where my brother was they just said room 14 (never been on this ward before so no clue where that was).

As I passed the other nurses st there where approx 5 people sat at the tables on the computers (this will be relevant at the end)

During my visit the doctor said my brother can go home. We where surprised as the doctors had explained how severe this break was yet they where sending him home with no cast or brace to protect the foot just a bandage and some crutches. My brother explained he cant use the crutches as the pain is so bad that he just has to sits down.

When me and mother queried the idea of him going home as an outpatient they just kept shrugging their shoulders.

Questions such as how will he climb the stairs to get to the toilet?

Can he be sent home with an abode or a wheelchair?

Explaining to them that his girlfriend is 5months pregnant with a high risk pregnancy. They just replied with....

He will be ok he is a big strong lad.

Are you joking me? He has a severe break to his foot. He cant weight bare but they expect him to climb stairs to use the bathroom and buy his own wheelchair.

The bit that has annoyed my the most is I am a 30 year old woman and when i asked a question (because i do look young) they looked at me as if i was a child and i shouldn't ask a question or to be quiet the adults are speaking.

There was one nurse just stood there eating a chocolate bar while my mum was speaking, making faces as we where questioning their care.

I just feel that the lack of care was unbelievable.

To finish off we are meant to give our details to the ward through a phone number which is not being answered. They want to contact us through my brothers number but his phone was smashed up in the accident. I have none stop been ringing to leave alternative contact details but no answer. I have rang repeatedly this morning for 2 hours straight and still no answer so we cannot get an appointment until they answer the phone. With so many people manning the nurses sts why is no one answering the phone. Why they couldn't take the details there and then is beyond me.
