"A high turn over of GPs so they rarely know..."

About: Hylton Medical Group

I have used this practice for years, some of the GPs at it in the past have been good, others not so much. I have Bi-Polar and have had GPs ask me how my epilepsy was doing as they had only looked at the screen and seen I was on some meds that treat both Bipolar and Epilepsy and had not taken the time to look at my actual history. I do not have epilepsy and have never done so. I have just come away from an appointment where I was worried about symptoms and was dismissed by the Doctor I saw who didn't give me a chance to go over other symptoms. Also the practice nurse often takes bloods and puts the equipment on the corner of a desk or mouse mat when she does it, not in a sterile tray, sometimes she doesn't even have an Elastoplast to cover the place the bloods were taken and used a lump of cotton wool she had placed on the desk and a piece of what was basically masking tape, even I know this is not good practice and the Nurses from the actual treatment room down stairs who always follow proper sterile procedures were mortified when I mentioned it. Not to mention going for mental health reviews where I wasn't asked anything about my mental health but rather about my smoking and drinking habits and then sent letters days later reminding me I needed a review because my appointment hadn't been labelled as such.

I am at the point of leaving this practice and moving to another as this one is so hit and miss, the last decent GP I saw at this practice has left and I am sick of the lottery of who I will see next.

Hello.

Thank you for taking the time out to comment on your recent visit to the practice.

I'm disappointment your visit wasn't to the standards you or I would expect.

To answer you concerns regarding high turnover of clinical staff.

We have had the same staff here for 3 years.

Granted when a GP is on leave we draft in locum replacements and have recently employed a new Advanced Nurse Practitioner but generally our turn over is very low.

Yes some medications are used for dual purposes/multiple diagnoses but the GP is right to ask the question for which problem are you taking such medication, but as a patient you expect your family practitioner to know these things about you and take their time to listen to your problems and help find a solution within the confined time restraints of a 10 minute consultation.

Regarding your practice nurse visit I will discuss this with the nursing team and reiterate our infection control procedures to ensure we abide by them at all times.

As you know our mental and physical health is affected by our lifestyle choices and it is normal practice to be asked about this at any consultation not just a mental health review. I can appreciate the frustration you must feel and hope this response reassures you we take all matters seriously. I would like to discuss this in detail and would be most grateful if you could email me on our generic email address hylton.medical@nhs.net I will get back to you.

Once again thank you for taking the time to comment and I hope to hear from you soon.
