I have been in and out of hospital for most of my life, experiencing MANY wards. I have a very complicated history, so any stay is never quick or simple! This last week was my 3rd stay on Hatten Ward in the last year alone and countless over the last 7 years- so I felt I had to write about it.
Everytime on this ward feels like a home from home, as much as that is possible! It’s always clean & tidy, and the atmosphere, although busy, is relaxed & friendly. Its clear to see they work together as a team, from house keeping to nurses to office staff, & all inbetween, helping each other achieve whatever needs doing. In this day and age with the amount of paperwork it can be hard for nurses to stop and spend quality time with all patients, as needed, yet they somehow do. I watched how nurses fought for their patients to get them tests they needed, spent time answering countless questions, with patience & kindness, and when needed helped patients to stand up to the drs to ask difficult questions the patients didn’t feel comfortable asking.I’m not usually a cryer, but when things became overwhelming, the curtains were swiftly closed and the nurse stayed with me, without hurrying me, talking me through everything, holding my hand until I had calmed down, not once checking the time.
These things may not sound like much, but when your in and out, and your health issues a bit scary, these things help immensely & talking to the other patients around me, it wasn’t just me that felt this way.
No ward is perfect, but after experiencing many over the years this is definitely one I find myself hoping for when I’m being moved from the assessment ward, and feel truly relaxed in, no matter what’s going on with my health, because I trust all the staff around me and I know I will get the best care.
