"Care of my mother-in-law"

About: Kilbryde Hospice

(as a relative),

This is an unusual one to post as I work in the Hospice.

My mother-in-law came in on Tuesday after being referred by the nurses. She was reviewed on Monday morning and was given a space that very day (she chose to come in on the Tuesday). As I'm aware every day the care is fantastic, but it's very different seeing it from a different angle. Seeing all my colleagues coming and going to help my mother-in-law was lovely. The care was outstanding and I'm very grateful to everyone. My family have repeatedly commented on this and in time will thank you themselves. To be on the  "other side of the fence " has been an eye opener ( in the learning sense), and has made me understand fully how families must be feeling. My mother-in-law sadly passed away on the Saturday night, but I know she wasn't in any pain due to the care. So thank you all. Your wee stars!

Dear Susan

Thank you so much for taking the time to post your story on Care Opinion. I'm delighted that there was a bed available for your Mother-in-Law on the day of her referral. We try as much as possible to avoid any delay to make best use of our resources. To hear that she was able to choose to defer her admission by one day reinforces our wish to provide the care that the person chooses and I'm glad we were able to fulfil this.

As Clinical Services Manager of the Inpatient Unit and a fellow colleague of yours at Kilbryde Hospice I can imagine this must have been a very difficult time for you. To be on the receiving end of Kilbryde Hospice family support must have been unusual for you but you still rated the care as outstanding which is great to hear. Your experience as a family member will be of great benefit to you in the future when caring in similar circumstances.

Susan, as you are aware, postive posts like these are a great boost to the staff delivering the care. I will be certain to circulate your thanks to all the staff and volunteers who are directly delivering care and who work behind the scenes. Its a true team effort!

Please take care of yourself in the coming weeks and months as you come to terms with the death of your Mother-in-Law. Please extend our condolences to the rest of the family.

Kind regards

Margaret Mary
