"Diabetes appointments being cancelled"

About: University Hospital Ayr / Endocrinology and Diabetes

(as the patient),

I have been type 1 diabetic since childhood. I always attend my appointments and make every effort to manage my condition.

I have been fortunate over the years to have had good support and input from Dr Collier and the diabetic team.

The diabetic team have been excellent however over the last 2 years my review appointments have continuously been cancelled and rescheduled. I fully understand this can happen for unforeseen circumstances however my appointment has been cancelled now for approximately 2 years. I get an appointment letter and then get another one saying cancelled and a new appointment comes in. Then the same thing again another letter to cancel it. On one occasion I didnt receive a letter to cancel it instead I attended and was told when I attended it had been cancelled and would be rescheduled. This isn't acceptable.

I had a letter for appointment again for the rescheduling of the appointment to get another one last week to say cancelled again.

I feel I have been very patient however over the last year I have had a real difficult time with my diabetes resulting in hospital admission and seizure. I recieved excellent care in ED UHA and plan was for diabetic review at clinic.

My wife had arranged time off to attend with me as we both are concerned re the change in my diabetic control. To have this cancelled yet again is not acceptable. I work shifts and organise my days off to attend.

I have spoken to Dr Collier who hasnt been aware the appointments have been getting cancelled. He has made every effort to get this rescheduled for me as soon as possible.

With diabetes risk factor for conditions such as heart disease and stroke it is essential I get my annual review by the team. I feel it is not acceptable for appointments to be continuously cancelled and no explanation. There may well be pressures on the system however this should be addressed by management to ensure review happens.

I would like feedback on why my appointments have been cancelled on so many occasions and more importantly what action will be taken to prevent this in the future for myself and others.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear SD76,

I am sorry, it is must have been distressing for you to have your appointments cancelled. It must also be extremely annoying when you attend an appointment that we have cancelled, but we have not told you, especially when you are having problems. You are right, it is not acceptable and not what we want for you and your care.

To look into this could you please call 01292 614819. With your details, Mary, the Assistant General Manager for that area, will be able to look in to this for you and get the answers you are after.

Best wishes,

Eunice
