"don't believe 111 - no on-call opthalmologist"

About: Royal Shrewsbury Hospital / Accident and emergency

in no way the fault of this department, but to anyone reading this - don't listen to 111 if you get eye flashes and floaters. Despite being told to get to A and E within the hour, and that there was an on-call opthalmologist, there is in fact no help available beyond a basic check. I was told that Shrewsbury is too small for such a service. If you have flashes and floaters, make an urgent optician appointment who will refer you on if needed - but outside office hours just pray. (unless you are the local MP who can get whizzed to Moorfields...)

Department also terrifyingly understaffed, two car crash casualties brought it to 'everyone who can should go home' and that's with the critical case being taken straight out of county to Stoke. I should stress that the doctor I saw was able to give reassurance that the next-day optician appt would be ok, and that to be honest was worth the long wait and the taxi fares. Thank you.
