We wanted to say a belated thank you and to recognise the staff of the Hanham Ward,
Victoria Hospital, Wimborne for the care and kindness shown to my father and all the family
during the last weeks of his life.
The professionalism and thoughtfulness of whole team
helped ease our journey.
A senior staff member told us it was a privilege to be able to care for patients in their final
days: we (including dad I am sure) felt equally privileged to be served by such a compassionate and dedicated team.
It is the little things that can make all the difference to time spent in hospital.
It is heart-warming to know that even on a busy ward team members regularly popped over to chat and joke with dad, which he greatly enjoyed.
The most moving occasion occurred on the penultimate day of dad’s life.
We arrived to find 3 team members taking their morning coffee break at dad’s bedside telling him stories about their lives. Although he could not respond verbally, we know he could hear and that he would have appreciated their companionship and consideration.
We could not be with dad in the last hours of his life (we did have permission), however we are comforted to know that he was not alone when the time came.
It is hard when a loved one goes on; even when both the patient and the family know it is time. Dad at 94 said that he had had a good life and was ready. He knew his body was giving up and was guiding and preparing us for the end.
The compassion and professionalism of the Hanham Ward team ensured dad passed on in the dignified manner he deserved and wanted.
We will all be forever grateful.
