"My husband"

About: Royal Bournemouth General Hospital / General medicine

My husband was taken into hospital last October 18.

He was very poorly. He'd had one leg amputated years ago but the other was infected and he had lung cancer. He became very weak and lost a lot of weight. He was in several wards, but was in ward 14 when the doctors found he had a bad bleed in the gut.

They knew he did not want any major op and they rushed him to theatre to stop the bleed.

They kept me and my family up to date on what was going on and we all knew he was getting worse.

They were all very kind. He was in Ward 14 and they broke the news that there was nothing else they could do as he refused to have his other leg off(although they felt the op would be too much for him). All the staff were wonderful and caring and made sure I was ok too. He was sent to Endoscopy to have the bleed stopped and was on the ward on his birthday. We all knew this would be his last birthday and when the staff knew, they all signed a card and they all stood at the bottom of his bed and sang Happy Birthday. He smiled and I could not keep the tears back. They were so kind. Sadly after being transferred into Muscliffe NH he passed away 22nd December 2018, but although we were so sad and grieving we felt we and the staff of the hospital could not have done anymore for him to keep him comfortable and out of pain. Thankyou everyone.

Now my sister is receiving chemo for live cancer there and again the staff are so really kind and the doctors and nurses take a lot of time to go through things with her and explain.

We do not know how things will go in the future for her at present, but she is a fighter and will continue to fight. Thank you again. I also have been in the hospital for several things and always feel so confident that I will be cared for in the best way incl the path lab for my warfarin tests. Thanks.

Dear Anonymous

Thank you for taking the time to write to us regarding the experiences you and your family have had with Bournemouth Hospital

We are pleased to know that the care, treatment and support provided by our staff has always been to a high standard but we know that sadly not all conditions are treatable and not all patients recover.

It is sad to hear that this has been your experience and hope in some small way, the kindness shown by the staff, especially on your husband’s birthday, has helped to lighten some of the grief you must have experienced at that time.

It may be of interest to know that our hospital has recently started a small service for those who have lost loved ones at our Trust, called ‘Time to talk’ - An opportunity to share personal experiences of bereavement and loss and receive compassionate and caring support.

We know how difficult it can be, especially in that first year, to come to terms with a changed life after the loss of a loved one.

If this is something you would like to know more about then please email: timetotalk@rbch.nhs.uk

Thank you also for highlighting the good care your sister is receiving with her chemo treatment and hope you hear good news in what is yet another worrying time for your family.

Thank you again for your kind comments which will be passed on to Ward 14 and shared with the staff.

Regards

Patient Engagement Team
