"Left waiting over 9 hours due to a secretarial error"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Short Stay Surgery

(as the patient),

I want to ARI yesterday for a small procedure. I was told to arrive for 7am, having fasted from 6pm the night before. I arrived at 6.45am and told I was second on the list for surgery that day.

At 9.30 the surgeon came to see me and told me all about the procedure. At 1.30 someone told me to get changed and I went to another waiting room. I was taken down for surgery at 4pm. This was a nearly 9 and a half hours waiting in the waiting room with out anything to eat, I am in my 70s.

I was second on the list but someone came to tell me I was now last on the list for the day. I asked why and it was because I get regular bladder infections and I was told one of the infections I had was E. Coli so after I had surgery they would have to sterilse the whole theatre. The nurse who explained this was superb. I was told the bug can stay in your body for a long time. I was told a red flag comes up against my name because of this so they they not have planned for this and told me to come in at mid day? The staff in the unit seems a bit embarrassed that this had happened.

I had to wait all day with nothing to eat, I was offered a coffee at 11am and told I hadn't needed to fast from 6pm the night before. If I had been able to coming in later I would have been able to get a lift to hospital (I could not drive due to the anaesthetic) but I didn't want to ask anyone for a lift so early in the morning and had to get a taxi.

My complaint is not with the staff, they were exceptional.  I am unhappy with the secretarial error and I hope the hospital can learn from this.

Also I was given a huge white folder filled with information and this felt like such as waste, who needs and will read all of this information? is there a better way to do this? we used to have an appointment card that all appointments were written on, this was less wasteful.

Finally I was also given a green bag to put all my current medication in and was told I needed to do this or they would not do the procedure but I was never asked for this at the hospital, it never even came out of my bag.

Dear blackbirdqs86

I am so sorry to hear of your experience at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. It must have been awful waiting so long with for your procedure. I am most grateful to you for sharing your story on Care Opinion. I will work with the Senior Charge Nurse and Nurse Manager to try to understand why this happened and why the knowledge about the bug was missed in the run up to you coming into hospital. As you say, this was a wholly avoidable error and your experience could have been so much better.

I am glad to hear that you found the staff to be so good at explaining things and that the actual care and treatment you had was of a high standard.

We have an improvement project on going for our day case work and we will use your story to inform us of changes that are required. We do endeavour to give people accurate information about fasting times and we are therefor very disappointed that you did not receive the correct information.

We know that well informed patients get better quicker but we need to ensure that we do not overload people with too much information.we also need to ensure that any information is given in a format that is usable and useful.

I am not sure about the situation with the green bag but I will certainly speak to the ward staff about this,

There is clearly a breakdown in communication between administrative staff and clinical staff. This is something we can definitely learn from and work on. Thank you again for taking the time to post you feedback. We really will try to use this for improvement.

I hope you are at home now and recovering well.

Kindest regards,
