"Physio access"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Physiotherapy

(as a carer),

Hi. My dad is m 79. He has severe left knee pain. Most likely due to arthritis.

He has been advised to get physio. He lives in Greater Glasgow and Clyde. To get an appointment he has to print off a form. Then actually to post of actually deliver it to the local physio department (QE). At first I did not believe such an outdated system was in place but I checked!

He has two close friends. One lives in Troon. They other in Motherwell. They have just referred themselves to physio via a free phone line for a service called Musculoskeletal Advice and Triage via NHS 24.

This seems like a great idea. Why does he have to buy a printer or annoy his busy GP. It seems strange why in 2019 such a non technical service runs where he lives?

Dear Skye 1940

Thank you for getting in touch.

Unfortunately the Musculoskeletal Advice and Triage Service (MATS) is only available in certain health board regions at present but this is gradually being rolled out across Scotland. At present, within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde you can ask your G.P. to refer you or you can use the self referral form (paper copies should be available in your GP surgery or at your local Physiotherapy Department).

Please pass on my best wishes to your Dad.

Kind Regards

Nicole

Update posted by Skye1940 (a carer)

Thanks for responding so promptly and we who live in GGC look forward to the day when we can self refer to physio without bothering my GP, printing off a form and delivering it compared to every surrounding health board where I believe he could have phoned a free phone number and if suitable been referred real time. As a non health person it seems strange to me that GGC seem to be the only health board not joining this or all other health boards are strange by joining it!

I am sure the powers that be in GGC realise and have been guided by their physio managers that their current unique paper based service is due to change and in doing do put the patient at the front, middle and centre of their care. Many thanks for your kind wishes.
