I got permanent brain damage about a year ago from a disease.
I gave up work and my hobbies. Day-to-day, I could no longer wash or cook without supervision from my partner. I could re-heat leftovers from the night before but could not prepare a meal. I couldn't speak naturally and publicly like before (I was a public speaker) or even transfer information like credit card numbers on the phone. Writing is similar. So is typing.
I decided to stop driving for safety reasons. I now take public transport (the bus). I can take journeys but have to plan them. I manage to get to appointments but it's a struggle. I got practical support from a speech therapist, a physiotherapist... in fact several members of the Community Neuro Management/Rehabilitation Team, Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust in Barnet.
During their intensive six weeks, they came to my home and gave me practical "that's good enough" strategies for basics like going upstairs, bedmaking, cooking burgers, writing, typing, walking and speaking on the phone to transfer information. The practical guidance I received from the Barnet Royal Free Community Neuro Management/Rehabilitation Team was intense but has made a real difference day-to-day.
"CNMT are intense but great!"
