"I could have gone home"

About: Stoke Mandeville Hospital / Ophthalmology

(as a service user),

I went to a and e with a suspected detached retina, after 1 hr l was triaged fine.

Then l had to wait another 3 hrs for a doctor to tell me no one was on duty who could examine my eye and more to the point no equipment, surely the triage nurse could have told me about the situation l could have gone home. As it was l arrived home at 3.30 am

l have now an appointment 4 days later. I must say the doctor who saw me was very thorough but could not do much, but the drs and nurses were very hard working and I could not fault them except perhaps the triage nurse who could me kept up to date with procedures at a&e.

So 4hrs of my life wasted.

Dear Sir/Madam

Thank you for taking the time to leave your comments on this website.

I am sorry to read of the problems you have experienced whilst using our A&E services.

I was also sorry to learn that you felt the triage process could have been smoother and more efficient. I have asked the A&E matron to comment on your experience and they have expressed regret that you did not receive the service we would expect to offer our patients. our A&E matron explained that there is equipment in ED to look at patient's eyes and the doctors are trained to use it.

If you would like your experience recorded and formally dealt with as a complaint so we can more accurately review what has gone wrong in your case I would be very grateful if you could contact the Patient Advice & Liaison Service (PALS) on 01296 316042 to talk about your experience, and to see how we may be able to assist you at this time.

Kind regards

Anthony Banton
