I had abdominal pain and was seen initially by the out of hours GP, he did look as if he had just been woken up and as there was no one else there we weren’t sure why we had to wait. But then the process of being seen by junior and then senior surgeons was faultless. I was started on medication went for x-ray and then sent to a ward. I admit, I was very lucky to be put in a private room on Mulberry Ward. During the next day I had a CT scan and eventually went down for the removal of my appendix in the evening. The subsequent 3 days of care were great. There were a couple of occasions where what one member of staff seemed to contradict another about how/when drugs should be administered, I didn’t really care as long as I got them and they worked. Particularly on my last day they were very short staffed and the nurses were trying to deliver and remove food trays as well as caring for the patients. The staff were constantly apologising for not answering buzzers or being delayed when they said they would be back sooner. Not really their fault, the country needs to appreciate what an invaluable resource the NHS is and fund/run it appropriately. I used Hinchingbrooke a few years ago in the day care minor ops section (that was incredibly efficient too) and just like on this occasion couldn’t really believe how much paperwork is generated, what has happened to an integrated IT system.
Nevertheless thank you to all the staff
