About: Goring Hall Hospital

I was booked in for a proceedure at Goring Hall. The first problem I encountered was discovering that I would have an anaesthetist when I had been told a few days before on the phone that I would not, & therefore could not give his name to the insurance company when they asked for it. I immediately had to call them before my proceedure to ensure that they knew his name. This should have been provided for me when I enquired about it on the phone prior to the appointment for the proceedure. I was told to arrive at 7.30 & I arrived a little early to ensure that I am on time. I was eventually shown to my cubicle and asked to wait. I was then told that my notes could not be found (a strange thing to discover since they should have had my notes ready from the night before), which meant that the lady in the next cubicle, who arrived after me, was given attention first. A nurse spent ample time with her chatting, joking, being friendly & making sure the patient felt comfortable. I was alone during this time & when the nurse finally came with a new set of notes, she was business-like, not friendly, no smiles & left me with little information. The consultant was very professional and gave me good attention, so no complaints there. When I came out of the proceedure, I was told that someone will accompany me to the toilet & that all I had to do is ask. Unfortunately, no one came to see me. The lady next door, once again, had ample attention, with someone taking her to the toilet. No such help was forthcoming. I rang the bell to get some attention, no one came for at least 10 minutes, by then the food arrived & so I stated (not truthfully) that I pressed the bell by accident and proceeded to eat my food. I then went to the toilet alone without help & the nurses who saw me in the corridor just ignored me. I was generally made to feel ignored and uncared for by the nurses attending me - not the ones who took me in the proceedure room, who were very kind, smiling, helpful and professional - no complaints there either. It was mainly the conduct of the ward nurses that left a great deal to be desired - especially in a private hospital. Had it been the NHS, I would have expected it.

Dear Patient,

I am sorry that your experiences were not as we would expect.

We appreciate that having to call your insurance company on the day of surgery to confirm details of your anaesthetists could have been communicated better. We have taken on board your comments about care and service and would like an opportunity to have a discussion, so that we can improve and respond.

We value your feedback, if you would like to contact me I will happily investigate and respond to you personally.

Please contact me via suzanne.steward@bmihealthcare.co.uk.

With kind regards,

Gary McHardy

Director of Clinical Services
