"Pleural mesothelioma"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Cardiology / Coronary Care Unit

(as a relative),

In April 2019, my mum was admitted to ARI with fluid on her lungs. We soon learned of a mass on the outer skin of her lung (Mesothelioma). This took a while to get a firm diagnosis. When we left hospital that day after talking with her doctor, who said this would be treated but not cured with chemo. However later there was mention of a trial based in Glasgow. (Mars 2 trial) this surgery could POSSIBLY PROLONG LIFE! Which we would have to travel to. This isn’t a problem!

We proceeded to Glasgow Beatson hospital in June. When we arrived we learnt of our mum having a minor heart defect. Dr’s at the Beatson clinic would only allow my mum to go forward with the trail if she had a further bubble echograph. This test would be done at ARI our local infirmary.  We understand there is certain criteria to be met that will enable her to be on the trial. We have phoned the lung cancer specialist on many occasions, who told us that mum's doctor had marked this as an urgent test. We couldn’t comprehend how there is such an apparent hold up for an illness with a life limiting prognosis, Last week, we called again to be told that the deciding member of the cardiography dept had declined as they felt the echograph should be enough. The lung cancer specialist has then resubmitted this request with the reasons why.

Of course, I’m absolutely appalled by the length of time this taken. We as a family feel let down on a massive scale by the system.

Due to the the lack of progress, my mum is now considering standard chemo.

This has taken to date three months & my mum’s NO further forward!

Dear Lf8

I am very concerned to read this.

I am the nurse manager for the cardiology service but do not directly manage the echocardiography service. I would be grateful however if you would call me with your mothers details and I will do my best to assist you.

If you or your mother can contact me tomorrow morning after 0830hr on my direct line 01224 550110 I will get someone from the service management team to investigate and then call you back directly.

Kind regards

Catriona

Hi Catriona, thanks for your reply. After talking first thing this morning to the doctor's secretary she advised me to call the cardio dept myself. That’s all the advise she could offer although she told me she knew about our situation.

So I did. Felt we needed progress & quickly. Spoke to the assistant manager.

she listened to our situation & said she’d find out what was going on. Wish I phoned her on the first instance.

Within the hour, my mum had an appointment for a bubble echo for the next day. That’s all we wanted & felt it was due to our mum.

Dear Lf8

I am glad to hear that you were able to get some assistance from the service management team and received a date for a bubble echo promptly.

I would take this opportunity to wish your mother well during this difficult time.

Kind regards

Catriona
