"Long wait for initial appointment"

About: Ninewells Hospital / Gynaecology

(as a relative),

Very frustrating experience that my mum is being let down by the gynaecology Dept at Ninewells Hospital.

Attended the GP earlier this year due to a prolapse; she was referred to the gynaecology dept. Having heard nothing from them and with the prolapse getting worse, causing great discomfort and having a hugely negative impact on her life, she has been told the waiting list for a first outpatients appointment is 9 months.

Understandably due to confidentiality Ninewells cannot give out any information regarding where she is on waiting list but to have to wait 9 months for an initial appointment is unacceptable. After this appointment there will be another wait depending on what treatment is recommended, meanwhile my mums lifestyle is being extremely restricted - very poor from NHS Tayside.

Dear “LSN”

Thank you for highlighting your concerns regarding your mum’s wait for a gynaecology appointment. I fully recognise your frustration and I am sorry that you feel your mum is being let down by NHS Tayside.

Regrettably our Gynaecology services have been experiencing an extended waiting time, in excess of the national waiting time standard of 12 weeks. The current waiting time for a routine General Gynaecology outpatient appointment is approximately 47 weeks.

There are a number of factors which are impacting on our capacity to deliver outpatient clinics and I would wish to assure you that we are making every effort to reduce the waiting times for our patients and improve the service that we provide.

Should your mum wish to discuss this, I can be contacted via our Complaints and Feedback Team on 0800 027 5507 (freephone) or by email to feedback.tayside@nhs.net.

Kind regards
