"The admission of my husband in his 80s"

About: Borders General Hospital / Cardiology

(as a carer),

He has a pacemaker and an AAA. He was admitted by ambulance at around 7pm because of an undiagnosed pain circulating around the upper abdomen.  We live in Northumberland but previously were in Borders for many years when his problems began, hence continuity of care to BGH.

He was treated promptly and given the time of night as quickly as could be expected. He was then asked to stay in overnight as he was still in pain.

I am in my 70s and came in the ambulance with him as I thought the AAA might be the problem. I do not drive at night.

At about 11.30 it was decided to keep him in for the night and I  was told I could kip down in the public lounge or couldn't I get someone to come and get me?

I was unable to complete what I think is a justifiable claim for my return journey to Northumberland, having arrived by ambulance from no choice of my own. I do believe that a different authority mitigates against the fact that this was an N H S journey

Dear lacertaqp36

I am very sorry to hear that your husband required admission to the Borders General Hospital after experiencing problems with his pacemaker and AAA.

I was glad to hear he received prompt treatment and hope that he has now fully recovered from his admission to hospital.

I completely understand why you would travel with your husband to hospital given that you do not drive at night and would no doubt be very worried about him. Unfortunately, we are unable to arrange transport home for relatives in these situations regardless of where they live and would therefore like to assure you that this was not because you had travelled from Northumberland. I fully appreciate that the time of night was not great and would not have expected staff to tell you to "kip down in the public lounge" for which I can only apologise.

If you would like to discuss this further, please do not hesitate to contact me on (01896) 827202 or email karen.maitland@borders.scot.nhs.uk

Thanks,

Karen
