I write to record my deep appreciation for a course of Physiotherapy at Udston Hospital which proved crucial to regaining my mobility and independence.
Following childhood polio in 1947, I have always required shoulder crutches and double leg callipers to keep walking and active. Nearly three years ago, at age 74, I broke both legs and had to spend eight months in plaster. During this time I was housebound and confined to a bed or a wheelchair. I lost my ability to walk and thereby my chances of regaining an independent and active life.
I was close to accepting this situation but it was at this point I started on a course of Physiotherapy with Mhari and Fiona and their colleagues at Udston Hospital. Over many months their skilled programme guided me from re-learning to raise myself from sitting to standing, to taking a few hesitant steps with a "pulpit" support, to gaining confidence to walk in a balanced way with crutches, to building up my ability to walk a distance and enabling me, for example, to access a car.
At age 76 I'm no longer housebound but now have a comparatively good level of mobility. I had come close to losing this and my wife and I are most indebted to the Physiotherapy Team at Udston for their skill, patience, support and unstinting encouragement which restored my independence and quality of life.
