"Bariatric pathway"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / General Surgery (Wards 16-18)

(as a service user),

When I was first assessed I found the staff member's manner dismissive. Despite fitting all the criteria and being type 2 diabetic, I was made to feel I was wasting their time. The consult took just 5 minutes and I felt as though they just wanted me out of there. I was told it was a 2 year pathway with no guarantee of surgery. No options were discussed and was told a gastric band was all that was on offer.

The next person I saw was the dietician. They basically told me all the things that would result in me being kicked off the pathway. I wasn't educated, I was just told to eat less and lose weight every month of the pathway or be discharged. I found that staff member's manner unhelpful and felt I was expected to succeed at losing 2lb per week every week until surgery. If I could do that I would not need surgery. There was no empathy at all and, as a result I dreaded every visit as I felt under so much pressure to keep losing weight indefinitely.

I would rather remain anonymous and calling you would result in my identity being revealed. I am concerned this would only further increase the odds of being unsuccessful on the bariatric pathway as a "difficult patient".

Dear ScotsLass,

Firstly, thank you for having the courage to share your experience through Care Opinion; the anonymity has clearly been helpful for you.

I appreciate the bariatric pathway can be challenging and it’s really important that you are able to work together with the healthcare team to achieve the required milestones to be able to proceed to surgery.

It’s your prerogative to take up Christine’s offer to make contact or not, we value people’s feedback as it is essential for staff to be able to reflect and learn. Please be assured that your feedback will not affect your current or future healthcare.

In the meantime Christine will share your story with colleagues at University Hospital Wishaw Dietetics Department.

I wish you well with your target setting and hope you manage to proceed to surgery if that is what you decide to do.

Kind regards

Rick
