"My hospital experience was entirely positive"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Cardiology / Coronary Care Unit

(as the patient),

I had a heart operation - mitral valve repair.  The care in hospital was suberb.  From cleaner to consultant the staff were great in every respect.  The nursing staff in particular were magnificent. Caring , professional and so knowledgeable about cardio thorasic specialism.

My hospital experience was an entirely positive experience ... even the food ( apart from the soggy toast which I finally gave up on )

The operation itself has ( so far 3 weeks post op) been a success. Before the op I was very breathless walking up any incline and walking up stairs was really difficult. So far rehab is going very well.  Walking birskly for 15 mins twice a day - hills included

Suggestions -

1 - more liaison with patient leading up to the operation.  I had to phone to remind the hospital that I had been waiting 12 weeks since consultation.

2 - Include mindfulness with pre-op preparation. I was very apprehensive about the operation and this process proved invaluable.  I would suggest it could be included in pre op physio session.

Dear Waltzpg89

Thank you for taking the time to give feedback following your recent admission to our unit.

Im very glad to read that you have had a positive experience around your surgery and that you are making a good recovery now you are at home. It is great to see that your new valve has greatly improved your exercise capacity.

I will be sure to feed back to all of the areas who were involved in your care and pass on your thanks to them. It is always lovely for the teams to know that they played a part in ensuring your time within our units was as supportive and caring as it could have been.

I will have a conversation with the Senior Charge nurses around the toast and see if there is anything that we can do to improve this.

I will also have a conversation with the Surgical consultants around providing feedback to patients who are waiting for surgery to see if there is anything that we can do as a unit to improve our communication.

Pre operative assessment is done differently across the units in our hospital so I will need to investigate to fully understand the process you went through but your suggestion around mindfulness is something worth pursuing further and I will endeavour to take this forward if possible. I do not manage the Physiotherapy team but will have a conversation with them to see if this is something that we can progress as a piece of improvement work within the unit.

Once again thank you for taking the time to give us this feedback. I hope you continue to make a good recovery.

Best wishes

Catriona
