"I find it difficult to speak to my mum's medical team"

About: Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust / Inpatient mental health care

(as a relative),

My mum is under section 3 of the MHA on Poplar ward. I sometimes feel frustrated that I am not able to speak to a member of my mum's medical team. Emails addresses are not given out that easily - I found this since my mum was admitted as an inpatient with GMMH in August 2018. Surely there must be a more efficient to communicate with relatives who are not local. I am also the nearest relative. I do appreciate that the team are looking after my mum, but the communication is disappointing. I have had to escalate concerns to their customer care department but this is often a time lapse here.

Dear RoseDawn,

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback. I am sorry to hear that you feel frustrated with the lack of information you are receiving about your mum’s care, please accept my apologies for any distress this may have caused you.

There are a few ways you can communicate with staff based at Poplar Ward. We have a generic email address (PoplarWard@gmmh.nhs.uk) to which any communication can be sent and passed on to the relevant person. You can also ring the ward (on 0161 271 0285) at any time to speak with the ward staff.

I have raised your concerns with the ward manager, Leanne Hopwood, who would be more than happy to discuss your experiences and ensure that you have regular updates about your mum’s plan of care throughout her stay.

I would very much like the opportunity to listen to your views, so I can pass on your concerns and contact information to Leanne to resolve these issues. If you would like to contact me directly, please call 0161 271 0547 or email: Hazel.Preston@gmmh.nhs.uk.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes,

Hazel Preston,

Operational Lead, Park House, Manchester
