"Therapists on short-term contract"

About: Lanarkshire Community Services / Adult Speech and Language Therapy

(as a parent/guardian),

I have previously written on the care opinion about SaL services within shotts. My daughter waited a long time to be seen after self referring and having a nursery referral put in for her. She was seen and the therapist starting working with her within the nursery setting. She has had sessions of Language Land as suggested by our therapist and the nursery have been involved in this. I have also been referred to attend the Hanen "More Than Words" course which will happen sometime later this year? I feel I needed this a year ago and wonder why NL are not running the "Talkability" course for parents???. I have also been attending the SaL sessions at my local health centre to help with my daughters language development and to support my own learning needs in this area. I was informed by my therapist last week that they will be leaving the service as the post has not been extended. I am deeply saddened and also anxious at this decision. It has taken some time to get things in place for my wee girl and for me and my daughter to build a relationship with our therapist.

I have also seen my nursery making the changes that have been suggested but they also feel they need/ want more support. I really don't know why someone was brought in on a short term contract as I know parents who are still waiting to be seen by SaL, so the numbers are still high in the area. I fully appreciate that money is tight but the problem of long waiting times remains. I now don't know when or who will next see my child next. When, or if, therapy will begin in the next school year for my daughter???? This is unacceptable. All the good work that the SaL therapist has done I feel is going to be wasted and my daughters progress will slip backwards with these changes? Why have these posts not been extended or made permanent when the need is there for all to see???

Speech and language therapy provides treatment, support and care for children and adults who have difficulties with communication, or with eating, drinking and swallowing.

Dear CC1978

Thank you for taking the time to write highlighting this issue.

I do remember your original post and can only apologise for the disruption caused by the temporary member of staff's contract finishing. I have spoken to the SLT Team Leader in your area and have been assured that all cases will be transferred to another therapist. I understand that you, the nursery and the therapist have all worked together to provide support for your daughter's communication and am pleased that you will also be able to benefit from the Hanen More Than Words Course. While we do not currently run the Hanen Talkability Course we are looking into the feasibility of running a North Lanarkshire area wide course as we do not currently have enough staff trained in this approach to run this for each local area.

There are a few reasons why we employ staff on temporary contracts, usually to provide additional cover for maternity leave or because the funding source is temporary. While not ideal in terms of continuity, it does mean that more children can benefit from SLT and not have to wait as long for treatment.

If you have specific queries about your daughter's therapy you can contact the Wishaw Speech and Language Therapy team based in the Houldsworth Centre on 01698 355511 / 01698 242617.

Kindest Regards

Pauline
