"Do I have diabetes?"

About: Somerset PCT

(as the patient),

My GP phoned recently to say that a blood test, for something quite different, indicated that I had type 2 diabetes.

When I had previously asked at the surgery about blood tests giving other indications I was told, no. The whole procedure is automated and it would not be possible. So what is the truth?

Later the practice nurse referred to it as "some diabetes". Are there degrees of diabetes, some of more immediate concern than others, say?

And how accurate are these blood tests? What is the percentage of error experienced? Can they, like blood pressure for instance, be affected to any extent by the earlier intake of food or medication?
