"My tomato challenge"

About: Musgrove Park Hospital / Paediatrics

(as the patient),

I had to visit the day ward for a tomato challenge, I was nervous and had butterflies in my tummy. It was boring waiting but there was lots to play with.

The nurses and staff were all Lovely and friendly, I had to spend the whole day in hospital but I got lunch. I got to miss school but I missed my friends. The staff helped me to feel comforted and supported.

It wasn’t nice having to eat something that makes me ill but they made it as nice as possible. My tomato challenge included eating cold tinned tomato on a spoon, tomato in bread but I didn’t like that, then they made it better by mixing it with cheese and letting us heat it as dip for crackers.

I’m just waiting now to go home but it’s been ages for the nurse to find a dr to let me go home. this story was written by N.

Dear N,

I was really interested to see what a ‘tomato challenge’ was. I would really like that as I love tomatoes but I can see how horrible it would be for you if they make you ill.

I am glad that the staff were nice and that you were well looked after.

I hope the results of the challenge help you stay well.

Dear N,

We always try to make food challenges as pleasant as possible for all children (no matter what the food is!) so it is good to hear that our nursing staff added cheese and crackers for you. I hope that the final result of the food challenge was successful for you.

I am so delighted to hear that the nursing teams particularly made you feel comfortable and supported you through the day especially as you felt nervous at the start of the day. I will make sure that I send your thanks to the nurses that were there yesterday. We have worked hard to improve the play area so I am glad you enjoyed the toys and games - I shall let the play team know too!

I am so sorry to hear that you had to wait for ages for a doctor to review you. I have spoken to the doctor teams that were on yesterday and did appear that it was an unusually busy day with some children that needed to be seen urgently. I hope that you did manage to get home and not miss anything important. I am sorry that your parents had to wait longer too.

I have been working hard with the team to improve our feedback to the Children's Unit recently and we have set up an I-Pad on the wall just by the area where you had your food challenge. I wonder if you could let me know if you used this I-Pad? We are hoping that more children and young people (as well as their parents) can use this rather than paper.

Feedback in a fast way will hopefully allow us to help other children and to improve how we work on the Children's Unit. If you are happy to let me know if you used the I-Pad then please do post otherwise do contact my secretary on 01823 342691 to let me know.

Thank you so much for taking the time during your warm tomatoes with cheese to let us know about your time with us yesterday:)

Best Wishes

Gita
