"Cancelled surgery, delay in treatment"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Day Surgery University Hospital Wishaw / Trauma & orthopaedics

(as the patient),

I attended WGH for shoulder and humerus surgery after waiting 14mths. I was admitted at 07:30 and changed into theatre gown only to be informed 7 hrs later my operation had been cancelled as there had been an emergency and the part needed for my arm had been used for the emergency, and as there was only 1 available my surgery could not take place.

I totally understand the need for precedence in an emergency but I had waited so long for this day and to say I was livid is an understatement, I was upset, severely disappointed and feel the system let me down badly. I have been living with severe pain and disability since my fall and thought this would be an end. I was told I wouldn't go to the bottom of the waiting list and hopefully may get a cancellation. I have other issues which I cannot discuss on here and have been through a lot to get fit for surgery and this delay has set me back I just need answers.

Dear Hurt and Angry,

I am sorry to hear of your experience and that you were cancelled on the day of your surgery. I appreciate how difficult and upsetting this must have been for you.

In order to look into this further for you, I would be grateful if you could contact our Patient Affairs Team at University Hospital Wishaw on 01698 366558 and pass your details to the team.

Kind regards,

Laura Hamilton
