I had my hip replaced a year ago. The care from all staff whilst I was in hospital was excellent, and I wrote to thank all concerned.
However, I feel that the information given at the 6 week postoperative check up physio led clinic was lacking. There was a group chat, then we saw a physio individually. At no time was I given a set of exercises to continue to help my recovery, leading to me still limping badly four and a half months after the surgery. My GP referred me to the community physio service, and with the help of a wonderful physio, I improved considerably. When I asked how common this problem was, I was told that it happened all the time. This is counter productive - the Exeter Hip Replacement is fantastic, but recovery is only as good as one's adherence to post op advice. Apart from anything else, this wastes NHS time. I would not have needed to see my GP, nor would I have needed the physio input if I had only been instructed in some exercises to use past the 6 week period, even if this just meant being handed an exercise sheet.
