"Offputting smoke"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary

(as a service user),

I use the shuttle bus between Woodend and ARI several times a week and think its a great service.   However, when arriving at ARI and getting off the bus its like walking into a smoke room at times with the amount of smokers along the side of the building and its really off putting.

Dear serviceuser,

Thank you for raising this valid concern.

I agree it’s not a great way for anyone to start or end their journey to ARI and acknowledge that despite our grounds and buildings being smoke free zones – with clearly displayed signage and smoking cessation support available, we do have difficulties managing those who continue to smoke on our site. At the moment we rely on the support of staff to challenge people smoking on site with back up available from security patrols if needed, but understandably many staff don’t feel comfortable doing this. Unfortunately, current legislation only allows enforcement of smoking prohibition inside our buildings but the good news is that new legislation planned for 2019 will extend that ban to 15 metres from hospital buildings and eliminate smoking at entrances - and we are working to take that forward.

Best wishes,

Kirsten
