"Absolutely exhausted"

About: Borders General Hospital / Acute Assessment Unit

(as a relative),

My husband who is suffering from cancer (since Dec. 2011) and now on palliative care, attended BGH suffering from rapid breathing.   We arrived in the afternoon, registered with Reception, but an hour and a half later when we noticed everyone who had arrived after us had been seen, we returned to Reception and found out that the nurse who had asked our name, and checked it was on the list, and told us to sit in the Waiting Room, had not informed the Receptionist that we were there!

We were eventually seen two hours after arriving and some tests were arranged (CT scan and ECG).   It was decided that he should be admitted as there were several clots on his lung, but it took till late evening before he could lie down.  He was absolutely exhausted.

Dear llauraparker

I am very sorry to hear that you and your husband had such a poor experience when attending the Acute Assessment Unit (AAU) at Borders General Hospital.

This is not the experience that we would want our patients to have and I would like to apologise for the extended wait that your husband had to be seen.

The details of your experience has been shared with the staff in AAU in order for us to avoid a similar delay in future.

If you would like to discuss this further, please do not hesitate to contact me on (01896) 827202.

Regards,

Karen
