"An excellent advocate"

About: Advocacy Support Cymru Talygarn Unit

(as a service user),

My advocate is an excellent advocate & accompanied me on two ward rounds. They explained the technicalities and my rights as a voluntary in-patient.

During my stay at Tal-y-garn hospital I have been -

• Denied access to a bible or any religious or spiritual book;

• Denied access to a prayer room;

• Denied the right to walk in the grounds, even after the 72 hour monitoring period;

• Been ignored by staff when I requested help following a seizure/fit due to acute stress reaction under instruction from senior staff

My advocate has helped me by signposting me to the community health council & healthcare inspectorate Wales to make a complaint, and helped me to request input from psychology and social work professionals.

N.B.

• Prior to admission I had been homeless and slept rough and in the car.

• I was already receiving help via home treatment team.

• Admitted voluntarily at the behest of my psychiatrist.

• Only therapy I received other than drugs was 15 min relaxation in 5 days on the ward.

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on the advocacy service you received, it is great to hear that you were made aware of your rights and were signposted to organisations that can hopefully help you. Good luck for the future.

Thanks
