"GMed appointment"

(as a parent/guardian),

My under 2 years old daughter has a chicken pox and her eye is badly swollen. I decided to call NHS 24 and was referred to hospital for GMed appointment.

When I arrived to Hospital, I informed that my girl has a chicken pox. Lady from the reception made a phone call to other member of staff. I was asked to wait outside (!) And wait for the appointment.

I was shocked but did as requested. It was very windy, decided to go inside between front and main door. People were constantly moving around, keep opening doors, and was really draughty place. I couldn't keep my toddler still, decided to go to cafe.  Appointment was over an hour late, then I decided to go up and speak to the reception again.

They then asked me to sit down in the corner and hold my little one.

Well .. it's very difficult to keep 2 years old in one place for more than a minute.. not saying for an hour. Especially she could see other kids playing.

I do understand that chicken pox can be very dangerous for pregnant women and people with low immune system but asking to go outside with ill toddler was beyond respect.

If place like hospital can't be safe place for ill child, where should I look for help?

Dear Pulpa,

Thank you for getting in touch.

I am really sorry to hear about your and your daughter’s difficult experience that was caused by the fact that you were asked to stand in-between doors to prevent others being affected by chicken pox whilst waiting for a GMED appointment.

I do not feel that you and your daughter have been taken care of appropriately and I would really appreciate the chance to talk through your story further with you. This would enable me looking into your daughter’s pathway as a patient and identify any improvements in processes that can be taken forward to help stop this happening again.

If you would like to do this, could you please contact me on nhsg.gmedurgent@nhs.net.

Kind Regards,

Magdalena Polcik
