"Waiting days now to have a swallow review"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Intensive Care Unit Speech and language therapy / Speech & Language Therapy - East Ayrshire

(as a relative),

My mums been in hospital for 73 days. 72 of which she has spent in intensive care (where the care she has received has been amazing) however she has been waiting days now to have a swallow review. I understand the staff have a high case load but my mum is nil by mouth in the meantime. She is desperate for a drink as the continuous oxygen she is having dries all the mucosal glands so her mouth and lips are constantly dry despite constant lip balm and oral care.

The waiting times in my opinion have been cruel. We were only informed today that they hope to visit at some point tomorrow. Mums feeding tube was dislodged overnight and so she went without any bed time medications or fluid overnight as the staff were unable to give her these orally. For a patient in intensive care/ high dependency I feel like they should have been seen in a shorter time space. Can I just note I have not complained about a single other aspect of my mums care over the 73 days. Every other MDT members have been completely amazing so far. And if my mum was able to write at this time she would be putting this complaint in herself ( she told me she will be writing one when she is finally discharged)

Dear Vegahs94

Thank you for your feedback. I am sorry to hear that you are unhappy with the time taken for your mum to have her swallow assessed.

I would suggest that you speak to the Senior Charge Nurse who should be able to ensure your mum receives the appropriate care.

I appreciate this must be an especially anxious time for you when you have a loved one in the intensive care unit for such a long time. I am glad to hear that all other aspects of your mum's care has been excellent but I do appreciate that it only takes one negative experience to reduce your confidence in the service.

I will ensure that you post is shared with the ICU team but if you wish me to do anything further, please don't hesitate to contact me direct on 01292 513610 or on email; Laura.Harvey@aapct.scot.nhs.uk

With my best wishes

Laura
