"Infant feeding support"

About: County Community Hospital / Dietetics County Community Hospital / Maternity care

(as a service user),

When I had my little girl I was so lucky to have Lana. I had decided to breastfeed early on in my pregnancy and was referred to Lana. Once my daughter was born and after a rough first week for her we got home from hospital.

Once we were home I was able to text Lana whenever I needed help or advice. We had problems with latch and it was Lana who noticed she had tongue tie and she was also the only person to take my concerns about my daughter having an allergy seriously. Lana referred us to the appropriate departments to have both issues seen to. She also advised how I could continue to feed whilst eliminating dairy from my diet. Unfortunately I received incorrect information from dietician and no longer felt able to breast feed.

Lana was truly a gem during all of this, not only as a feeding consultant but someone I could turn to. I am truly grateful for all the help and support we received from her from pregnancy to our last feeding time.

Hi SHM,

Many thanks for telling us your story and I am delighted you received such great support from Lana our infant feeding support worker. It is also nice to see recognition of how she goes over and above to support women in her care and you certainly identified this in your story.

I am sorry you felt that no one else could identify a tongue tie for you - recently we have carried out a lot of work with midwifery and health visiting staff to roll out a diagnostic tool to aid timely identification of restricted tongue movement. I will certainly pass on your story to our head of midwifery and also head of health visiting to ensure staff are using this tool.

I am glad you were referred by Lana to the appropriate service for allergy diagnosis but I am saddened to read that you received incorrect information and felt that you could no longer breastfeed. I will pass on your story to the head of the paediatric dietetic service who hopefully can respond further to your story and I am sorry that you had this experience.

Thank you again for taking time to tell your story and hopefully we can improve services for anyone else that may be in your position in future.

Hi Karen

Thank you so much for your response. Lana had referred us to you and we were lucky enough for you to help us get allergy milk the day of our appointment with yourself and by pure luck we also managed to get her tongue tie sorted that day too. I can not thank you both enough!

Thanks SHM for the lovely feedback,

As promised I have raised your feedback with my paediatric dietetic colleagues and they are very sorry to hear that you were given incorrect information. They would like the opportunity to review the dietetic management of your baby. To do this they will need to know your baby's name and date of birth. If you are happy to provide this then please e-mail them at: paediatricdietitians@highland.gov.uk

Thank you

Karen Mackay
