his was actually said about me:

“‘Very complex and strange meeting with * took place with her sitting to the side of her chair and not making eye contact, she spoke very quietly, played with her hair and cuddled a soft toy.

At one point she became mute and then started to write her communications in a note book to show us.

Difficult to tell at this stage whether this is all selective and manipulative or a genuine characteristic of her Asperges ”

Okay, so here’s me displaying typical symptoms of autism, and trying my best to cope by utilising sensible, effective methods; yet I am vexatiously accused of being manipulative.

Welcome to the world of MH services, where they don’t understand ASD, don’t want to, and instead misdiagnose you and harmfully mis-perceive your actions

I am really sorry to read about the experience you had with the Community Mental Health Team. We strive to meet the needs of everyone we see so I can only apologise for the recent meeting you had with the service, and how you felt your Autism was not understood.

Our Community Mental Health Teams have close links with the Leeds Autism Diagnostic Service and training is provided on how Autism can affect mental health. There are also members of the team who have an increased knowledge of Autism gained from training and previous employment, we try where possible to utilise these skills to benefit the team as a whole. We are mindful that the needs of somebody with a diagnosis of Autism need to be met, as they would be with anyone else who finds themselves in need of support from our service.

I would like to once again apologise for the experience you have shared, please be assured that we are determined that knowledge of Autism is shared across our services so that an increased person centred approach will be provided to people with a diagnosis of Autism and mental health needs. Your comments will be used to inform these discussions so thank you for raising them with us.

Linda Rose, Head of Nursing
