"The excellent service my wife received"

About: NHS 24 / NHS 24 (111 service)

(as a relative),

I wish to express my admiration and thanks for the excellent service my wife received in the Easter Holiday from NHS 24.

My wife (86 years old) who some 5 weeks previously had a TAVI (spent 3 days in Golden Jubilee) followed a week later by by 4 TIAs (and subsequent falls in which she broke her wrist) resulting in a 7 day stay in the stroke ward of QEUH, Glasgow. She was discharge on earlier this month with very poor walking and her wrist in plaster.
Two weeks later she noticed a "shingles" type rash. She phoned NHS 24 at 1345 approximately and a medical doctor arrived by 1700 and ensured that the local pharmacy had "acyclovir".
As it was a national holiday on that date we were exceptionally relieved to have a medical opinion and action within a short period, I am 90 years of age therefore could not have taken my wife to the out of hours clinic as the pharmacist suggested in the morning.
Many thanks

Dear Rogerm

Thanks so much for sharing your experience on Care Opinion. It sounds as though this has been a very difficult time for you both and I do wish your wife well. Being in plaster can be hugely debilitating, however from reading your story, I am sure you are providing excellent care for your wife and are a huge source of support to her.

On top of her health issues, it was unfortunate that you wife contracted Shingles which can be an extremely unpleasant infection. I am pleased she was able to get access to the required medication to help to treat her symptoms quickly, especially as you say, on a public holiday.

Should you wish to contact me with any further detail, I would be delighted to hear from you. This would mean that I could share your feedback with my colleagues in the Out of Hours service as it would have been one of their GPs who visited your wife at home and checked the availability of the medication with the Pharmacist. I can be contacted on 0141 337 4582 or by email at patientaffairs@nhs24.scot.nhs.uk

In any event, I will share your story more widely within NHS 24 so that our staff can be reminded of how the patient care they provide can have a hugely positive impact on people who require to call NHS 24.

Thanks again and my best wishes to you both.

Shona
