"Outpatients waiting area layout is not functional"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres

(as the patient),

Again i visited Hairmyres outpatients and was dissapointed to see no changes have been made to the waiting area and reception area.

there have been several story's on this site regarding the waiting area and reception and that promises have been made that the waiting area and reception will be moved and redesigned. yet it looks like no attempts have been made.

will it take an accident or a breach of confidentiality for you to act? as in the waiting areas you can hear everything being said at the desk and indeed in some of the rooms when the doors are opened. the lay out is not functional and to say it is, is in frank a joke!

people could not move for wheel chairs blocking pathways and blocking access to seating.

the Que for reception was out onto the corridor blocking access to 4 consultant rooms. nurses and Drs clearly frustrated by this

The staff were all understanding and lovely and they too agreed that the department was layed out wrong but there was nothing that they could do. the nurses are amazing at there jobs, Maybe if you went and listened to them you would get something done.

should coming to hospital not be a calm and welcoming experience not having to navigate round people and chairs.

Dear Johndoe123,

I can only apologise that we have not been able to make the planned changes to the outpatient reception area as planned yet. I've been in discussion with the nursing staff and the reception staff that work in the area to make sure that the solution we arrive at is going to be the best one possible for patients and staff.

I'm happy to say that we have now agreed a plan and placed an order for furniture and equipment to enable the new reception area last week. The reception itself will stay ion the same position but will be reconfigured to allow the queue to form away from the consulting rooms.

I'm really sorry this has taken so long. I would hope to have the furniture delivered within the next 4 to 6 weeks and after that we will be able to make the changes immediately.

Kind Regards,

Cameron

Dear Johndoe123,

I' m happy to be able to update you on the changes we've made to the reception area within the Outpatient Department. We now have in place new reception furniture in a configuration which allow the queues to form away from the consulting room. This week we are installing additional power sockets which will eliminate the issues with trailing cables that a number of Care Opinion posters have drawn attention.

I've heard from the staff in the department that these changes have made it a better environment for patients and would be really keen to here your thoughts on your experience following your next visit.

Kind Regards,

Cameron
