"Cancelled operation"

About: Lymphoedema Service Strathcarron Hospice / Day Care Service Western General Hospital / Oncology

(as the patient),

After having breast cancer developed very painful lymphodema and had operation but was due to have another which was January 2019, phone call two days before operation got call to say that operation cancelled due to winter bug then another call to say it was because of bed crisis in all Lothian hospitals so two different stories, because I have another illness and need bed for more days than usual was explained to by bed manager that it was the most serious operations that were getting done which I totally understand and would not have it any other way.

My home circumstances are also very unusual at the moment as my husband suddenly had a stroke and needs help so organising home care etc was very difficult only then to have to cancel all of it, my consultant did phone myself which I really appreciated stating op would be probably spring time due to bed situation and he also knows my home situation which he showed me and my husband nothing but pure compassion.

Would like to say Strathcarron Hospice was very much the best care and compassion showed.

Still waiting on next date for operation and in so much pain.

Dear Shady60,

I am very sorry that your operation was postponed and that you received conflicting advice as to the reason. Winter can bring additional pressures and surgery is only cancelled if there is no other option. We understand the disruption and upset it causes. It is important that we are able to care for you safely following surgery.

If you contact the patient experience team on 0131 536 3370 with your details they will put you in touch we me so that I can ensure that another suitable date is being organised for your surgery.

Thank you for your kind words about your surgeon.

Once again my I apologise for the distress caused by the delay of your surgery.

Kind regards

Audrey
