I went for a session that informed a group of patients what was the care for knee replacement patients. It was a very hot day and I fainted during the session. It was only after the op I realised what I had missed, I had missed the visit to the group by the occupational therapist
I was therefore not given the equipment deemed necessary to recovery. I found mobilising and carrying out certain functions extremely painful as I was doing them unaided. To make matters worse I only came to realise what I should have had when I received a call requesting that these non existent item be returned.
Later the same week I was phoned by a nurse from the hospital asking why I had not been discharged from the hospital after 3 days as been predicted at my clinic visit. I explained that I had become unwell twice on consecutive night and on both occasions the overnight care team was called out by the nursing stall. I answered the question but was astounded that a nurse phoned a patient asking why they had not been discharged on a predicted date when there were records available to him. Surely that was a question for colleagues to answer if it is not documented.
I feel let down by the lack of follow up after my faint. I should have been reappointed to the pre-op information clinic, perhaps I should have requested one, however I trusted that it was thought I had received all the necessary information.
I have suffered pain and discomfort struggling when I should not have needed to this has made me really angry and let down. I realised that knee replacement surgery will have a painful recovery but really feel my mobility difficulties have made my recovery harder than it needed to be. It happened 2 years ago but I am still suffering pain as I over used my knee struggling to do life's necessities when I should have had aids.
"Poor pre and post care of knee replacement."
