"Calderdale birth center trauma"

About: Calderdale Royal Hospital / Maternity care

(as the patient),

I came into the birth center in labour with my first baby around 10.30pm after being told I could come in as I had phoned earlier in the evening as advised.  I was shown to a room, examined, told to have a bath and left to get on. This was all okay, my contractions carried on until i was being sick, as often happens with pain. They gave me an anti sickness injection at around midnight but unfortunately it didnt stop my sickness. We moved to the birth pool, I was given gas and air and this was okay until I needed more pain relief. The midwife didn't seem to want to give me anything... she said I didn't need it? I asked to go to the labour ward, was told I didn't need to? I eventually had pethidine at around 4am.

I was asking to go to the labour ward for more pain relief (epidural) from 4am, still being sick, still in pain. I was told I didnt need to, then told they were full? And then I was left alone. The midwives didnt seem to want to deal with me now I had asked to leave. I was being very polite, as was my husband who was also repeatedly asking for me to be moved.

I was eventually moved upstairs, but this was when the midwives changed shift at 8am. The new midwife on shift saw me and moved me immediately. I now notice this indicates how the other two just were ignoring me. However at this point I was fully dilated, therefore couldnt have pain relief (epidural) and my contractions had all but stopped. Resulting in a very painful assisted delivery, and absolutely traumatic experience!  I feel this is all due to the 2 midwives on shift who didnt seem to want to move me, this would keep their transfer rate down.

My care should have been considered above the transfer rate of the birth center.

Also, in the 4 hours of being left alone after the pethidine, I should have been monitored, they could have told me i was almost fully dilated and they would have known I couldn't have the pain relief in the labour ward.  The contractions I was having at that point I should have been told to push with. As a first time mum, I didnt know when I should have done, and so my contractions stopped.

The labour ward did the best they could when there, credit to the midwives on the ward.  However my experience was awful, left alone, ignored and ultimately a very painful delivery which it needn't have been.  All due to the birth center and the midwives on shift.  They let me down massively. I entrusted them as experts to know what to do and they completely ignored me as a patient.
