"We were advised to watch and wait."

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Oncology

(as a relative),

My husband was diagnosed with slow growing prostate cancer, which we were told by an Oncologist at treliske hospital was so slow growing it would not kill him he would die of something else. We were advised to watch and wait.

We never saw a doctor or oncologist - just a nurse. In the meantime, despite asking for brachytherapy at the initial consultation, we were left.

My husband is now dying with multiple mets in bones lymph and liver. So I ask that your oncologists look at their "watch and wait" ideas again. My husband is just 66 yrs old and I would hate to see this happen to anyone else.

Dear Janni

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback of your husband’s experience since he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. I am so sorry that he was told by an Oncologist that this was slow growing and advised to watch and wait, when the outcome has been very different. My name is Elizabeth Trew and I am Lead Nurse for Risk, Patient Safety and Patient Experience here at Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust, I am saddened to learn that your husband is now dying with multiple metastases in bones lymph and liver.

I appreciate this must be an extremely difficult time for you both, but if you feel able I would welcome the opportunity for my Patient and Family Experience Team to discuss this further with you. We would like to see how we may be able to support you going forward and learn from your husband's experience. If this is something you would feel comfortable doing or if you have any other concerns you would like to discuss, please contact Jenny Thomas, Patient Experience Engagement Manager or Michaela Brewer, Patient Experience Coordinator. You can telephone them direct on 01872 252760 or alternatively you can email rch-tr.ppi@nhs.net; their office hours are Monday-Friday 9am-4pm.

Again, I am so sorry for your husband's experience and I am grateful that you have brought this to our attention.

With kind regards

Elizabeth Trew, Lead Nurse for Risk, Patient Safety and Patient Experience

I would very much like to speak with you as I don't want anyone suffering this again. My husband has moved to cheltenham where he has had amazing treatment, the care there has been like a different world to what he received at treliske. Also I would have loved to have bought him home to Cornwall,as he is a true cornishmen but the end of life pallative care that I have witnessed in the county is not good so he will remain in Cheltenham where we know he will receive the care he deserves
