"Food awareness very poor"

About: Royal Hospital for Children (Glasgow) / Ear, Nose & Throat (ward 3b)

(as a parent/guardian),

My son went for 4 procedures in Glasgow Royal Hospital at Children ward 1A. He had tonsils and Adenoids removed, Grommets put in and his airways checked.  He'd had a pre op 5 months in advance so they were aware of allergies etc. He can't have milk or barley. These are not difficult to avoid with a little bit of thought.  I am really unhappy that he was not offered balanced healthy food whilst in hospital .

In Forth Valley the staff come round with menus and take food orders from patients and allergens are listed and dairy free options are listed etc.

In ward 1A my son was given chips, sausage and spaghetti hoops (a tin from a nurses own lunch) . I don't think this is very conducive to a healthy recovery.  Pasta with veg, rice dishes,  fish, poultry , Casseroles soups, fruit and dairy free yogurt would be the sort of dish I expect. I would never give him a meal with no veg.

In the morning the breakfast was self service and everything laid out had barley in it and mum husband had to ask for alternative cereal and milk. I don't see why this is necessary when the hospital knew well in advance.

He got upset through the night and a nurse came and offered him ice cream. I feel something is definitely wrong with procedures for this to happen. Also one of the nurses kept using an ear thermometer getting zero readings. I was told by another nurse the ear thermometer shouldn't be used after grommet op.

Dear Lady nutrition

I was very sorry to hear about the food offered to your son both at mealtimes and outwith. This must have been very upsetting at an already worrying time.

With your permission I would like to look into your son's case further to find out how our usually high catering standards let us down.

If this is acceptable, can you please send me your sons name and date of birth to coral.brady@ggc.scot.nhs.uk?

I hope to hear from you.

Kindest regards

Coral
