My Mother, aged 79, fell and broke her hip on Christmas Day. She was taken into Aberdeen Royal Infirmary where she under went surgery and spent a total of two weeks on an orthopaedic trauma ward. She was then transferred to Insch Community Hospital for further care and rehabilitation.
During her three week stay at Insch she went from someone who thought she would never walk again or be able to live independently again to being able to walk with the aid of a zimmer frame and believing that she would be able to live independently again. I put this transformation down to
- the genuine care, patience and friendliness of the staff who had time to spend with and talk to the patients
- the time and space available for her physiotherapy and occupational therapy sessions including a home visit with her to check that she could manage to go up and down stairs
In my experience of the NHS Insch Community Hospital is a unique facility where the staff and patients, in this case my Mum, benefit from the size of the hospital (approx. 10 beds) and the consistency of care and friendliness this allows.
