"Breast cancer surgery funding"

About: NHS East Staffordshire CCG

(as the patient),

I had excellent care throughout my breast cancer journey in 2018 but feel hugely let down over certain services that were withheld from myself that other women don't encounter.

I had a mastectomy and asked if I could have immediate reconstruction with implants due to low self image and the fact I don't want to be flat during my wait for recon surgery. I was informed that the local hospital didn't do thus due to radiotherapy afterwards. I have since found out that other women have had implants whilst having radiotherapy afterwards often with no ill effects.

I have had severe issues since my surgery in July with seromas and have had to have it drained several times. I feel if I'd had the temporary implant this would never have happened. I'd like to know why this CCG is withholding money when ladies who want double mx due to anxiety issues and symetry are being informed they cannot have surgery on the healthy breast. This is NOT cosmetic surgery this is to help rebuild a woman's life after breast cancer and the emotional trauma that comes with losing a breast. Not all women want to live flat some would like to look womanly and that comes with a lot of psychological issues if she is denied that. The prosthesis is heavy and the softies ride up. They are very inconvenient and to put up with this for a year is tiresome.

I would like the CCG to seriously consider funding for bilateral mastectomy with recon for both breasts and not to keep withholding funds when women have already had the biggest fight of their lives they dont need another for surgery that should be readily available as it is in other health authorities. Also if it is withheld let that lady take herself to another hospital without then dictating what will happen funding wise there. It all seems so unfair to breast cancer ladies.
