"CMHT"

About: Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust / Adult mental health

(as a service user),

I told my gp in November that I was struggling with low mood and sleep and asked for quetiapine that was prescribed to me earlier in the year by the cmht. I didn't want these outn of your choice but I knew they would help me sleep as I had them for 4 weeks in spring and they helped me sleep, because my GP has told me they don't prescribe sleeping tablets . The GP prescribed them and after 4 weeks I went back and explained that I wasn't feeling any better I was lacking all motivation, had been through a stressful time and he referred me back to the cmht.

I got an appointment for mid Jan.

When I went I had  a 35 minute appointment with the person (not sure what their job role is)

I explained that the meds weren't working, they must have clearly noticed as I cried almost the whole way through, I explained that they aren't working and I'm gaining masses of weight.

I was told they would talk in the team meeting and call me the following day.

That was Monday, I finally got to speak to this person on Friday afternoon and they said that I would be getting an appointment to see the doc, I already had the appointment for March, I asked what had happened about the medication, they said they would need to speak to the doctor again but the doctor finishes early on a Friday, so it will be the following week, I called and left a massage the following week and got a call back saying the doc said stay in the meds just take 1  a day and get some exercise.

I've been on them since November, it was December I said they weren't working, I waited for my appointment in Jan to request they be changed, to be told to wait til March ?

So basically I was suffering since November and expected to suffer more until March ? On tablets that are doing nothing for me at all ?

My recovery involves being able to function, these tablets weren't allowing me to do that.

I told this person that I hadn't been to work since November, I had got to the point of not bathing or looking after myself, visibly excessive crying and not cooing, yet there was no intervention to try me with something different until March ??

I was advised to call Pals, so I spoke to someone, who told me they would get the doctor to call me that day, no call came. I text PALS the following week saying I haven't had a call and asked for them to call me, no call came from pals.

By last week I realised that cmht weren't going to help me, so I cancelled my appointment in March. I contacted Pals today to find out what had happened, the person I spoke to said I had been told that they would send me a leaflet out. I said I had recorded the telephone conversation and it clearly states that they will be asking the doctor to call me that day. The pals person then said I can only apologise, and would send me a leaflet of how to complain ?

This is nothing like the services they explain they offer and I realise that when I mentioned the word cmht nobody takes me seriously.

We are sorry to read your feedback and this isn’t how we would want your situation to be handled. Our CMHT teams are very busy at the moment and there is a wait of a number of weeks to see a psychiatrist in some instances. We understand that sometimes there may be a need to see a psychiatrist sooner and we operate a duty worker system at all CMHT’s so that someone experienced is always available to support and assess further needs. There can be a need to allow a number of weeks before some medications can show a result but we would want the chance to discuss any troubling side effects with you. If you can contact our Head Office on 0121 301 1111 and ask for our Complaints Manager directly, I will make him aware of your concerns regarding the PALS service and he will investigate these also.
